A Walk to Turbait Island — Why Family Photos Matter More Than Ever

boy with the leaf

Last Saturday, just around midday, we went for a walk to Turbait Island in Belturbet, Co. Cavan.
It was just me and my two sons — George (11) and Leon (9).

The air felt like autumn, crisp and quiet, the ground carpeted in yellow leaves. The boys were completely in their element — picking up leaves, throwing sticks into the water, laughing at every little splash. A perfectly simple moment. A perfectly beautiful moment.

And then something unexpected happened…

They suggested taking photos — before we even left the house.

If you’re a parent of older kids, you’ll understand how rare that moment can be. These days they’re not too keen on having a camera pointed at them, so when they asked, my heart did a little happy jump. Out came the camera, and suddenly we were capturing memories again — natural, carefree, real.

No poses.
No pressure.
Just them being them.

And that’s when it hit me — take the photos while they let you. Because this stage doesn’t last forever. One day they run toward the camera with excitement and the next they pretend it doesn’t exist. Childhood moves fast. Moments move faster.

A Little Personal Truth

For those who don’t already know — I actually have three sons, not two.
But for the last few years, my photos mostly show only two of them. That’s the reality of kids growing up — one day they’re all together, the next they each step into their own world a little bit more.

That’s why these photos matter. Not because they are perfect, but because they are real and real is where the magic lives.

Mums, It’s Time to Be in the Photos Too

As a photographer, I take thousands of photos of other families.
But like many mums, I am rarely in the photos with my own children.

So here’s my promise to you:

If you book a family session with me, I will make sure you are in the photos too.
Not hiding behind the camera. Not saying “next time.”
Because you are part of their story.

Let me capture the giggles, the quiet moments, the hand-holding, the togetherness. The moments your children will want to look back on someday and remember exactly how it felt to be loved by you.
